What Are Job Scams
Job scams are a type of fraudulent job posting. Job scammers often attempt to persuade victims to send them money or to provide them with personally identifiable information. Although these types of scams have existed for a long time, they have become more prevalent on online job boards.
Although the Columbia Engineering team attempts to review any post uploaded to our system, it is the responsibility of every individual to do their due diligence before responding to any posting on Columbia Engineering Career Connect.
How to Recognize Potential Scams
When applying for any open job postings, it is important to look out for the following warning signs.
Any request for financial or personal/private information. Requests to transfer money between accounts. Requests to send money via wire service or courier. Suspicious email domains or company websites. The compensation or offer seems too good to be true. The hiring process moves unusually quickly. You are offered a job without ever interviewing with or meeting the employer. Short or vague job descriptions. Frequent grammatical or spelling errors in job postings or communications.

How to Report Potential Scams

If you received a suspicious email you can report it to [email protected] with full headers (see “How to report a suspicious email to [email protected]”) so the CUIT Cybersecurity team can investigate.
